Chía is one of the most sought-after grains in Nicaragua and around the world due to its high nutritional value. In Nicaragua, this precious grain is part of various traditional beverages.

Chía in the pre-Hispanic era was part of the grains consumed by Aztec and Mayan communities.

A Versatile Use

Additionally, these cultures used it medicinally and also offered it as an offering to their gods.

The Aztecs gave it to warriors so they would have energy during long journeys. It was also used as a source of energy; in the ancient language of the Maya culture, 'chía' means strength.

For many years, chía consumption declined until recent years when all its benefits became known, leading to a resurgence. However, in Nicaraguan cuisine, it has always been present in their delicious refreshing beverages.

Today, the main cultivation areas are the same ones where pre-Hispanic communities used to farm it, and the tradition has continued, expanding to other parts of Nicaragua.

A Highly Nutritious Food

Chía is a very complete food thanks to its content of vitamins, antioxidants, and proteins. It is an ideal grain for those on a dietary regimen and looking to lose weight because it has a high water absorption capacity, giving a feeling of fullness and preventing overeating.

It also provides all the necessary nutrients and proteins. Its seeds are rich in fiber, contain high levels of Omega 3, which helps control cholesterol levels, strengthen the immune system, and regulate blood sugar levels, helping prevent diabetes.

It is a food with a high mineral content.
